How Much Does It Cost to Maintain an App in 2026?

What app maintenance really includes, typical monthly and yearly costs, what drives them, and how real-time support differs from a basic maintenance plan.

The short answer

Plan to spend roughly 10 to 20 percent of your app's original build cost on maintenance every year. For most small and mid-sized apps we support, that works out to US$60 to US$400 per month (about CA$80 to CA$550), depending on how complex the app is and how much monitoring and support you need.

Larger agencies often publish higher figures, and enterprise apps can cost tens of thousands per month to run. The ranges here reflect the apps most small businesses and startups actually operate.

What app maintenance actually includes

Maintenance is not one task. It is a set of ongoing jobs that keep an app working, secure and accepted by the app stores.

  • OS updates: every new iOS and Android release can break something, and the stores eventually require apps to target recent versions
  • Dependency and security updates for libraries, SDKs and the backend
  • Bug fixes for issues users report after launch
  • App Store and Google Play release management, including review rejections
  • Server, database and hosting management
  • Uptime and error monitoring so problems are caught before users complain
  • Small improvements and feature tweaks over time

Typical maintenance costs by app size

These are our own ranges for apps we build or take over. Hosting and third-party service fees are usually billed separately, at cost.

  • Simple app with little backend: US$60 to US$120 per month (about CA$80 to CA$165)
  • App with its own backend and admin panel: US$120 to US$250 per month (about CA$165 to CA$340)
  • Complex or real-time app, such as streaming, POS or marketplaces: US$250 to US$400 or more per month (about CA$340 to CA$550 and up)

What drives the cost up

Apps built on a single cross-platform codebase, such as Flutter, are generally cheaper to maintain than two separate native apps, because each fix and update is made once.

  • Number of platforms and apps, for example customer app, provider app and admin panel
  • Real-time features such as video, chat and live order tracking, which need closer monitoring
  • Third-party integrations, because every external API can change underneath you
  • How quickly you need a response when something breaks
  • How often you want new features rather than just upkeep

Maintenance plan vs real-time support

A basic maintenance plan covers scheduled work: updates, patches and releases. Real-time support adds live monitoring and incident response, so problems are caught and fixed while they are happening, not days later when a user leaves a one-star review.

For apps that earn money while they are running, like a restaurant POS or a paid app, real-time support is usually worth the difference. For simple apps with low traffic, a scheduled maintenance plan is often enough.

What happens if you skip maintenance

Unmaintained apps decay. Within a year or two they typically stop working properly on new phones, get flagged or removed by the app stores for targeting outdated OS versions, and accumulate security vulnerabilities. Bringing an abandoned app back to life usually costs far more than maintaining it would have. If you have an app that has gone without updates, we can audit it and give you a fixed price to bring it up to date.
