How Much Does Custom Software Development Cost in Canada? (2026 Guide)
Real price ranges for custom software, mobile apps, web apps, POS systems and AI agents in 2026, what drives the cost, and how to keep your budget under control.
The short answer
Most custom software projects we deliver land between US$1,000 and US$12,000 (roughly CA$1,400 to CA$16,500). A focused MVP sits at the low end; a multi-app platform with real-time features, an admin panel and integrations sits at the high end.
You will see much larger numbers elsewhere. Published guides from Canadian agencies commonly quote CA$15,000 to CA$250,000 or more for custom software. Both can be true: the price depends heavily on scope, on who builds it, and on how much process and overhead sits around the code. Below are the ranges we actually quote, and the reasoning behind them.
Typical price ranges by project type
These are starting ranges for a scoped project. Every final quote comes after a short discovery call, because two projects with the same name can differ a lot in what they actually need.
- Marketing website: US$300 to US$1,000 (about CA$400 to CA$1,400)
- Simple mobile app or MVP for iOS and Android, built once in Flutter: US$1,000 to US$2,500 (about CA$1,400 to CA$3,400)
- Mobile app with its own backend and admin panel: US$2,500 to US$6,000 (about CA$3,400 to CA$8,200)
- Complex platform such as live streaming, marketplaces or multi-app products: US$6,000 to US$12,000 and up (about CA$8,200 to CA$16,500 and up)
- Web application or business dashboard: US$1,200 to US$4,000 (about CA$1,600 to CA$5,500)
- Custom restaurant POS with a web admin panel: US$2,500 to US$6,000, one-time, and you own the software (about CA$3,400 to CA$8,200)
- AI agent or LLM integration: US$800 to US$3,500 (about CA$1,100 to CA$4,800)
- Automation, scraping or internal tools: US$300 to US$1,500 (about CA$400 to CA$2,000)
- Ongoing support and maintenance: US$60 to US$400 per month (about CA$80 to CA$550)
What actually drives the cost
The single biggest driver is the number of distinct things the software has to do well. Each user role, each integration and each real-time feature adds design, build and testing time.
- Number of apps: a customer app, a provider app and an admin panel is three products sharing one backend, not one
- Real-time features: live video, chat, order tracking and WebSockets cost more than simple forms and lists
- Integrations: payments, maps, SMS, accounting systems and third-party APIs each add work and testing
- Offline support: software that keeps working without internet, like a POS, needs local storage and sync logic
- Design depth: a polished custom design costs more than a clean, component-based interface
- Compliance and security: handling payments, health or identity data adds review and safeguards
Why our prices are lower than many Canadian agency quotes
We are a small, Canada-registered team rather than a large agency with account managers, multiple layers of management and a downtown office to pay for. We also build mobile apps in Flutter, which lets one codebase ship to both iOS and Android instead of paying for two separate native apps.
We are also honest about where we are: we are a young company building our reputation, and we price accordingly. You get the same engineering we put into live products like our restaurant POS and our own Expense Tracker app, at a price that reflects that we are still earning our reviews.
Hidden costs to budget for
The build is not the only line item. Plan for these so nothing surprises you after launch.
- Hosting and infrastructure, usually US$20 to US$300 per month for a small to mid-sized product
- App store accounts: US$99 per year for Apple, a one-time US$25 for Google Play
- Third-party services such as SMS, email delivery, maps or video, which are often usage-based
- Maintenance and updates, typically 10 to 20 percent of the build cost per year
How to keep your budget under control
Start with the smallest version that proves the idea, then grow it. Most of our clients launch an MVP in weeks, learn from real users, and fund the next phase from what they learn. Ask for a fixed-scope quote with clear milestones, keep a short list of must-have features separate from nice-to-haves, and choose a team that will still support the product after launch, because rebuilding a half-finished app with a new team is the most expensive path of all.
